Build up those muscles

Came across the following article on the BBC website:

Lifting weights 'good as running'

I think some resistance training is important when on a diet. Of course it really helps burn fat. My problem is I get very bored with being in a gym. I prefer to play sports. Still I'm thinking I really need to take up some weight training, help burn the remaining fat and tone up a little.
