We all know (or at least we are told) that China is responsible for Human rights abuses. We also know that there are people in Tibet that want the place to be a separate state to China and they are struggling for that goal.
My problem with all of it is that there are other problems around the world that the media could be focusing on rather than give a disproportionate amount of attention to this issue alone. There are problems in Darfur, in Palestine, Bosnia, Zimbabwe, Iraq, Afghanistan, and even poor forgotten Chechnya (who cares about those guys anymore?!). There are human rights abuses and struggles for independance and freedom from occupation, dictators fixing elections and all sorts going on. And yet it seems the world focuses solely on Tibet. The politicians react only because its in the media spotlight. Thank you George Clooney for highlighting Darfur issue and not joining the celebrity bandwagon on Tibet.
If people feel so strongly about this issue, boycott everything from China. Don't get me wrong, I'm against all kinds of oppression and if Tibet is indeed suffering under China and the people want to be free then sure, why not. However one thing to note, Tibet has been part of China for over 800 years.
The problem of Palestine affects us all. Israel is the unlawful occupier and this is a fact. In terms of innocent people dead, Israel has killed more people since the start of the year then the people who have died in Palestine. For facts on figures on this issue go to: www.electronicintifada.net
What about Iraq, a war fought by the so called defenders of human rights based all on a lie. A war that was supposed to be over and declared to be so and yet General Petraeus says he needs more troops to fight in Iraq. Excuse me, but didn't you say you had won the war there?
What about Afghanistan? Now the conflict is supposed to be throughout Afghanistan and not just restricted to the south. Hang on, I thought you defeated the Taliban. Alternate news sources at the time gave the Taliban view on their withdrawl back then. They claimed they moved out because the people were being bombed all the time (true - US was carpet bombing all over Afghanistan) and that they did not have the resources to fight the US and its allies in the same manner. So they said that they would fight them as they fought the Soviet Union by retreating to the mountains and using the tactics used before.
Looks like they have succeeded in their aims and the US and its allies have failed. What boggles the mind is that that US and UK have spent our money fighting two massive wars and have achieved very little and the people are in a worse situation. If they had utilised that money to help these people they may have made a bigger difference. In Iraq US is apparently spending £5 billion a month! What is that over 5 years after supposed victory? £300 billion! I'm sure Sadaam could have paid off with a fraction of that and thousands of peoples lives would have been spared.
Instead money is being spent and there seems to be no end in sight.
End of Rant!
