Life is but a test

The urge to write on my blog again has been triggered by my daughter reading it. It is strange that now that I appear to have time to write I am not writing anything at all. So much has happened in the last few months, personally and otherwise. I lost my job back at the end of 2012. I have had some good interviews and have come close to getting a job but as it is a very competitive market, I've been pipped to the post several times. During this time I have been through some low points but ultimately what brings your spirits back up are things like the following.

"And He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine. And whosoever puts his trust in Allah, He will suffice him. Verily, Allah will accomplish his purpose. Indeed Allah has set a measure for all things." (At-Talaaq:3) The prophet (sallAllahu alayhi wassalaam) said: "If you rely on Allah as He should be relied on, He will provide for you as a He provides for the birds; they go out in the morning with the empty stomachs and return full." (Ahmad & Tirmidhi)

This reliance mentioned here does not mean that we abandon worldly means to gain our provision. Allah (subhana wa ta'ala) has provided us with the means to do this. We do not rely on the means but utilise them and rely upon Allah for the results. Yesterday I got news from a company I interviewed for. Someone had sent them a message saying some rather bad things about me, about how I left my last work place and so on. All I can say is that it was deliberately done to "screw me over" as a friend put it. I had met up with some friends and colleagues after my interview and had discussed, as you do, the company and the role that I was going for. One of these guys must have mentioned to others, who clearly are not my friends, and the result was this message to my potential employers. Fortunately the guy who could be my boss is a good man and he has spoken to me, he will be satisfied if my references are good. InshaAllah.

On this point, many of you may have had heard the following hadith and will understand that no one can give or take anything away without it being the will of Allah (subhana wa ta'ala).

On the authority of Abdullah bin Abbas, who said : One day I was behind the prophet and he said to me: "Young man, I shall teach you some words [of advice] : Be mindful of Allah, and Allah will protect you. Be mindful of Allah, and you will find Him in front of you. If you ask, ask of Allah; if you seek help, seek help of Allah. Know that if the Nation were to gather together to benefit you with anything, it would benefit you only with something that Allah had already prescribed for you, and that if they gather together to harm you with anything, they would harm you only with something Allah had already prescribed for you. The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried."

Narrated by Termithi, who said it is true and fine hadith

In a version other than that of Tirmithi it reads: "..Be mindful of Allah, you will find Him before you. Get to know Allah in prosperity and He will know you in adversity. Know that what has passed you by was not going to befall you; and that what has befallen you was not going to pass you by. And know that victory comes with patience, relief with affliction, and ease with hardship."

This hadith was taken from Imam Nawawi's Forty Hadith collection. I urge everyone to go through that as it is an amazing collection. It has enabled me to stay on the right path as it provides guidance for all muslims in terms of rights and wrongs, beliefs, character and much more. I provided the full hadith (no. 19 in Imam Nawawi's collection) because the lessons in it are too valuable to quote just an excerpt.

The part I wanted to focus on was "Know that if the Nation were to gather together to benefit you with anything, it would benefit you only with something that Allah had already prescribed for you, and that if they gather together to harm you with anything, they would harm you only with something Allah had already prescribed for you".

So what will be will be. What I need to focus on is ensuring that I refrain from sinning, ask Allah's forgiveness, take the means he has provided, and implement the sunnah in my life.

I don't know where my next job will be, whether it is here or elsewhere. I know that Allah subhana wa ta'ala has blessed me and I do not go hungry, I have a roof over my head, no one is trying to kill me, no is preventing me from carrying out my religious duties, my family are well and thriving. He has not tried me with poverty, war or famine. I am indeed showered with his blessings and have no cause for complaints.

Sadly many around the world, especially in muslim countries, are suffering greatly. The problems in Syria, where innocent people are being slaughtered on a daily basis, much of the historical sites are being wiped out by bombs, and much more. The problems in Bangladesh with the recent massacre in Bangladesh (May 6th 2013) of protestors by the government. Not to forget others around the world, the Rohingyans, Afghans, Iraqi's, Chechens, Bosnians, Palestinians, Somalians and many more. My situation is nowhere near theirs.

Life is a test but I am not being tested that way - subhanAllah!

Ya Rabb, help the people around the world who are suffering, Ameen.

The test has to be put into perspective. Look at those who are in a worse situation then you and it will prevent you from wallowing in self pity. Turn to Allah for everything and rely only on him. So insha Allah, things will pick up for me and insha Allah the person who has tried to interfere will not have succeeded. They, like myself, will have to answer for their deeds. Some of the brothers, when informed of this situation, suggested that the person who did it, we should bombard his next employer with emails. This is not something I believe in doing. I leave you with another hadith from the collection of Imam Nawawi.

On the authority of Saad bin Malik Al-Khudari, that the messenger of Allah said : "There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm."

A fine hadith related by Ibn Majah, Al-Daraqutni and others
